The Essential Oils – How-To Guide

The methods of use are what make aromatherapy one of the most beautiful and indulgent of all the complementary therapies. Essential oils can be used as a final hair rinse, inhaled to ease congestion or worn as perfume on pulse points.  Along with their mood enhancing and healing benefits safety must be observed. As essential oils are highly concentrated, they must be diluted before application to the skin. Nor are they to be ingested without practitioner advice.

There are so many ways to enjoy the captivating aromas of our pure essential oils. Here are a few of our favourites to get you started.

Diffusion or Vaporisation

Diffusing pure essential oils is often regarded the most effective and safest way to gain their benefits.

Once essential oil particles are released into the air and we breathe in the mist, they affect the way we think and feel in powerful ways. Their relaxing, uplifting and arousing properties are experienced immediately. The particles are also absorbed into the body and can have a profound effect on both physical and emotional states including calming the mind, promoting sleep, and balancing hormones.

Ultrasonic Diffusers work on the vibration of water rather than heat, making it safe to use in any setting, even when sleeping. Simply fill your diffuser with water to the maximum fill line. Add 6-9 drops of pure essential oil to the water and breathe in the healing aroma.

Inhalation

Inhalation is an effective way to treat respiratory conditions, including hay fever. Add 3 drops in total of your chosen essential oils to a bowl of hot steaming water. Place a towel over your head and inhale deeply for 10 minutes. The essential oil molecules are absorbed by the respiratory system into your body to reduce inflammation and break down mucous congestion. Not recommended for small children.

Direct Method

There are certain cases where essential oils may be used directly on the skin such as with blemishes and cold sores. When a very small area of the skin is to be treated, the direct method can be applied. Dispense 1 drop of pure essential oil to the tip of a cotton bud. Apply directly to affected area. Choose one oil only.

Bathing

Bathing is the most beautiful and nurturing method of use in the practice of Aromatherapy. All the senses are engaged in this practice and the mind and body are totally relaxed as the pure essential oils enter the body. Add 3 drops in total of chosen oils to one teaspoon of Sweet Almond Massage Base Oil and disperse into bath water. Swirl the surface before immersing the body into the water.

Relax for 10 minutes.

Note:  Not all oils are suitable for use in the bath. Avoid using herbs such as Lemongrass, they are very stimulating and may irritate the skin. Some Citrus oils such as Sweet Orange will also irritate the skin.
